Dark Roots after a highlight appointment
I love highlights, who doesn't? But just like almost everything we enjoy, there can be too much of a good thing. When I have a new client who comes to the salon for a first visit I always ask why they decided to make a change to a new salon. Oftentimes they tell me that they had dark roots after a highlight appointment. There are several different possible causes for this including: Over highlighting the hair. When the entire head of hair starts to resemble a very light one process instead of a dimensional, rich highlight there is stark contrast. Even on the day that the hair is highlighted it may still look dark and rooty. Adding soft, dimensional lowlights throughout the hair gives a more natural and blended look and provides a more graceful grow out. Not lifting the highlight retouch light enough. When touching up highlights it's crucial to lift the color perfectly so that it blends. If you don't lift the color enough you'll be left with dark roots after a highlight appointment. If you lift the roots too far you could have the opposite (although equally unattractive problem of roots that are brighter than the ends. ) I call this end result "upside down hair" and trust me, it's not pretty.Waiting too long between appointments. When your maintenance goes off the rails, so does your color. The better the maintenance the better the blonde. Although I can make someone look good when they go over their maintenance by weeks or months it never looks as good as the clients that stick to their schedule. Pre-booking appointments is usually the best way to avoid having this result. When appointments are made in advance there are more times available, and we can clear time to take care of ourselves. Booking an appointment the week before usually offers very slim pickings. These are some of the reasons why a client may feel that the have dark roots after an appointment. The key points to active a blended, beautiful blonde are: good maintenance, perfectly matched color and dimension for soft grow out and root connection.
