How to Use Velcro Rollers for Smooth, Bouncy, Salon-Quality Volume

One of the things I noticed over and over again working in my salon was that women really, really wanted to be able to recreate a professional blowout at home. They wanted soft volume, a polished finish, and they especially wanted what stylists do almost instinctively: take care of the ends. I still remember how I felt BEFORE I became a hairstylist, and I remember feeling the same way. Wishing that I could style my long, wavy hair like a professional would, but not having the slightest idea of how to do it.

Most people completely ignore their ends during a blowout, and honestly? That's what makes the difference between a style that looks expensive and one that just looks... fine. Polished ends are everything.

how to use velcro rollers

Here's the thing though — you don't need to fight with a round brush for 45 minutes to get there. Velcro rollers are a genuinely easier way to achieve that same result, and once you try them the right way, I promise you'll wonder why you waited so long. You actually don’t have to juggle the round brush and the blow dry to the end. You can finish things off perfectly with rollers. You just have to know how.

I say the right way because there are a few things that really do matter. When women try rollers on their own and don't get great results, it's almost always the same two reasons: they skip the pin curl clips, or they're using the wrong products. Either one will completely sabotage you.

But when you do it right? You'll have phenomenal, supermodel-level hair. I'm genuinely not exaggerating.

Here's exactly how to do it.

✨ What You'll Need

These are the tools and products I actually use and recommend. I'll link everything below so you can grab exactly what you need without the guesswork.

Step 1- Start With the Right Wash

This is your foundation, and it matters more than people think.

Wash with MONAT IR Clinical Shampoo — it promotes lift and scalp health, which sets you up for a fuller, airier result from the very beginning. Follow with MONAT IR Clinical Conditioner, which hydrates without weighing the hair down. That balance is really important when you want volume.

Rinse well and towel dry.

Step 2- Prep for Hold and Longevity

This is where the right products make or break everything.

Apply a generous amount of Volume and lift spray through your mid-lengths and ends. This gives your hair structure and hold without making it feel stiff or crunchy — which is exactly what you want for a soft, bouncy finish.

Distribute it evenly with a wide-tooth comb.

I know that sounds counterintuitive, but this is a professional trick — a light flexible spray before heat gives your blowout serious staying power and a much smoother finish. Don't skip it.

🔥 Step 3 — Blow Dry Until Completely Dry

This step is non-negotiable. Your hair needs to be completely, fully dry before the rollers go in.

Using your Dyson Supersonic, blow dry until the hair is smooth, the cuticle is flat, and there's zero dampness anywhere. I mean it — anywhere.

Here's why this matters: velcro rollers set the shape and create longevity and lift. They don't smooth frizz. Your blow dryer does the smoothing. If you put rollers in damp hair, you'll end up with a frizzy, undefined mess and wonder what went wrong. After your hair is dry mist in MONAT Hairspray

🎀 Step 4 — Section Like a Pro

Neat sections = polished results. This isn't optional.

Divide your hair into three vertical sections:

  • Top / Mohawk section

  • Left side

  • Right side

Use sectioning clips to keep everything clean and controlled while you work.

🎀 Step 5 — Use Enough Rollers (Most People Don't)

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see. Too few rollers means uneven tension, flat spots, and ends that aren't fully wrapped — which takes us right back to that unprofessional finish we're trying to avoid.

The velcro rollers come as a 4-pack, which I actually love because it takes the guesswork out of sizing. You get both and you just use what works for your hair.

As for how many sets you need — that really depends on your hair. I have extremely long, thick hair and I use about 4 sets to do my whole head. Someone with shorter or finer hair might only need one. The rule of thumb is simple: you need enough rollers to cover every section without rushing or skimping.

One thing worth knowing is that roller size does matter, and it could honestly be a whole post on its own. A good general rule is that your roller size should roughly match the round brush you'd normally use to style your hair — if you can only work a small round brush through your hair, jumbo rollers aren't going to work for you. I'll be doing a dedicated post all about choosing the right roller size for your hair type, so stay tuned for that!

Step 6 — Roll With Intention (Direction Really Does Matter)

Take a section no wider than your roller. Hold the hair taut and start rolling from the ends toward the scalp — and pay close attention to your ends as you begin. If they're not smooth and neatly wrapped when you start rolling, the finished style won't look polished no matter what else you do. Take that one extra second. It's worth it.

  • Top / Mohawk section: Roll backward for height and lift

  • Sides: Roll downward for soft movement toward the face

Place a Velcro Roller firmly at the root, then secure it with a  Clip.

That clip is not optional. Velcro alone will not hold your set properly — this is one of the main reasons women think rollers "don't work" for them. The clip is what keeps everything in place while your style sets.

Step 7 — Heat, Then Cool

Once all your rollers are in:

Mist lightly with MONAT Hairspray, then use your Dyson on low heat to warm the rollers. Then — and this is the part most people rush — let everything cool completely. That means 5 to 15 minutes, minimum.

The cooling is what actually sets the style. The heat opens things up, the cool locks them in. No cooling = no longevity. I promise you this step is worth the wait.

Step 8 — Remove the Rollers the Right Way

Hold the hair taut as you slide each roller out. If you just yank them out loosely, the velcro will snag and create frizz — undoing all that beautiful work.

Once they're all out, use your fingers or a boar-bristle brush to soften the curls and blend everything together. Finish with a final mist of MONAT Hairspray to seal it all in.

The Result

Bouncy, shiny, frizz-free volume. The kind of blowout that looks expensive and effortless — because when you have the right technique and the right products, it kind of is.

A Small Investment That Pays for Itself Over and Over

Here's something most people don't stop to think about: when you invest in these tools once, you're setting yourself up to save hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars over time.

A professional blowout typically runs $40–$50 each visit. Do that weekly and you're looking at $2,000+ a year. With your own rollers, clips, and dryer, you can recreate that glossy, bouncy finish at home for a fraction of that — and the only thing you'll keep repurchasing is your styling products.

Once you get the technique down (and it really only takes a few practice sessions), you can have beautiful hair at home, while traveling, on a busy morning — whenever you need it.
