Network Marketing vs. Affiliate Marketing: What’s the Difference and Which One is Right for You?
If you’ve ever looked into ways to make money online, you’ve probably come across both network marketing and affiliate marketing. They’re two of the most popular business models out there, but they’re actually pretty different from one another. So, how do you decide which one is right for you? Let’s break it down and talk about what each one really means, and I’ll share my own thoughts based on my experience.
In this video, I dive into network marketing and affiliate marketing—the pros, the cons, and what I’ve learned along the way. Before we get into it, though, let's quickly cover the basics of both.
What is Network Marketing?
So, network marketing—also known as multi-level marketing (MLM)—is a business model where you sell products and build a team of people who sell products too. Here's how it works:
Personal Sales: You earn from your own sales, but there’s more.
Building a Team: The real magic happens when you recruit others to sell the same products. You earn commissions from their sales, too.
Residual Income: The idea is that once you’ve built a solid team, you can make ongoing income from the work your team does.
This model has a lot of potential because it’s scalable. Your income can grow as your team grows, and that’s something a lot of people love about it. But you have to be good at leading, motivating, and guiding your team if you want to see those results. I think it is often over hyped and people talk about doing it as if it were easy. It is not. It takes skill, effort and consistency to do it.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Now, affiliate marketing is a bit different. It’s a performance-based business model where you promote other people’s products and earn commissions for sales you generate. Here’s how it works:
No Product Creation: You don’t need to create your own product. You just find products you believe in and promote them.
No Team Building: You don’t recruit anyone. Your focus is just on getting traffic and making sales.
Commission-Based: You get paid based on how many products you sell, usually through affiliate links shared on your blog, YouTube, or social media.
Affiliate marketing can be great if you love the idea of working solo and focusing on promoting products that align with your values. You don’t need to worry about managing a team, but you also won’t earn anything unless you make a sale. I have many affiliate links that I share. If I purchase a product, use it for a few months and really love it, I frequently request an affiliate link from the company. Pro tip, most companies say no when you first ask for a link. Don’t be shy, write them back and tell them that you love the product, use it and believe in it, and thus….you would be a greta affiliate.
Key Differences Between Network Marketing and Affiliate Marketing
Both of these methods allow you to work from home, but they’re pretty different. Let’s break it down so you can see which might work best for you:
Income Structure:
Network Marketing: You earn both from your own sales and from your team’s sales. There’s potential for residual income as your team grows.
Affiliate Marketing: You only earn from your own sales. It’s all about the traffic you drive.
Team Building:
Network Marketing: To scale, you need to build and support a team. If you’re good at leadership, this could be a big plus.
Affiliate Marketing: No team to manage. It’s all you and your content.
Product Ownership:
Network Marketing: You sell products from a specific company. Your focus is on promoting that brand.
Affiliate Marketing: You’re free to promote a variety of products from different companies. You can choose what fits best with your audience.
Skillset:
Network Marketing: You need good sales skills, but also strong leadership abilities to motivate your team.
Affiliate Marketing: It’s about mastering online marketing—SEO, content creation, social media—so you can drive traffic and make those sales.
Which One is Right for You?
If you enjoy building relationships, leading a team, and growing something long-term, network marketing might be your sweet spot. It’s a great fit for those who are passionate about helping others and building a business together.
On the flip side, if you’d rather focus on promoting products you love without managing a team, then affiliate marketingcould be a perfect fit. It’s more independent and allows you to tap into multiple income streams.
